Tackling the emotional side to your eating
If you struggle with overeating and overweight you may be aware that your relationship with food is affected by emotional, social or family stressors. Factors such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, or body image dissatisfaction may also be present, and these issues can interfere with your efforts to stick to a long-term weight loss plan. Psychological therapy offers effective techniques for helping tackle these factors, which in turn makes the possibility of progress towards a healthier lifestyle feel more realistic and attainable. Therapy at Oakwood House is either cognitive behaviour therapy or integrative psychotherapy (which means your therapist is trained in the dominant theories of talk therapy). Either way your therapist will tailor the way s/he works to suit your needs.
Understanding yourself better
Alternatively you might be interested in understanding your eating better and discovering whether there is an emotional or interpersonal component hindering your efforts to change, and if so, what you can do to cope with these stressors in new and more effective ways.
Dealing with the past, creating a better future
Some people who have difficulties with overweight may have histories of adverse experiences in childhood or adolescence which may have disturbed their body image or eating behaviour at an early age. In this case psychological therapy can offer a safe place to explore the effects of these experiences and move further into healing from the past.
Referral process
Psychological therapy is available by referral only. Please speak with your GP about a referral to your local SWMS Coordinator. If upon assessment by your SWMS team it is agreed that psychological therapy will be of benefit, they will arrange for a referral to be sent to us. You will be contacted within one week of our receipt of your referral.
