Dramatherapy and Creative Arts Therapy
Creative arts therapy involves the use of dance, drama, music, art and poetry as forms of therapy. Creative arts therapists believe that a person can explore their inner emotions and thoughts not only through words but also through other forms of expression. Creative arts therapy can be effective at helping people to discover hidden thoughts and feelings and is used in both one-to-one and group formats. Creative arts therapy can be particularly useful for those who have difficulty in articulating their feelings verbally and who want to try another form of communication and exploration.
Dramatherapy uses the healing aspects of drama and theatre as the therapeutic process. It is a method of working and playing that helps facilitate creativity, imagination, learning, insight and growth, giving equal validity to the body and mind within the dramatic context. This form of therapy makes use of role play, art work, voice work, relaxation techniques and storytelling. Movement and objects can be used expressively without words. Dramatherapy enables the participant to explore difficult life experiences through an indirect approach, engaging the imagination. It helps one to look at alternative perceptions and interpretations of the self. Dramatherapy is a relatively new form of therapy that could open a new world of discovery, particularly if talk therapy has not been particularly suitable.
No knowledge of the arts or drama is necessary for one to benefit from creative arts therapy or dramatherapy. Both therapies are client-led, and are therefore tailored to suit the individual. The therapist sets up a safe environment to help clients build on their strengths and work creatively and effectively. Creative arts therapy and dramatherapy help with: exploring important relationships; communicating better; boosting self-confidence, motivation and self-esteem; exploring existing problems; rediscovering creativity, energy and zest for life; managing stress, and learning to relax.
Try creative arts therapy!
'This is who I am: A journey of self discovery' is a creative arts and dramatherapy group focussed on improving identity and self-esteem. Over 12 weekly group sessions we use music, literature, art and drama, alongside group discussions, to consider the value of boundaries, assertiveness and empowerment, working towards a stronger and more confident sense of self. We will identify areas of our lives we would like to change and work towards realising our hopes for the future. The group is open to interested participants aged 16+ (you don't have to have an eating disorder to join). It costs £60.00 for 12 sessions (free of charge to current Oakwood House NHS clients). Group starts on Wednesday 4th May from 7 - 8:30 p.m. and runs weekly until 27th July. It is facilitated by Joanne Blezard.
Places are limited and this is a popular group so we recommend booking a place by mid-April. Registration from can be downloaded here: Download
